Bringin' in the Corn
Down on the Illinois Farm

Unloading on the Go

It takes skilled teamwork to sucessfully unload on the go without wrecking the equipment or dumping a lot of corn on the ground. The combine and pickup wagon are moving together about 4 mph above. Harvest rate is increased about 30% if the combine does not have to stop to unload. It is easier on long, straight rows.

Three Brothers

Three Shane brothers, Paul, Bill and Mark, take a short break to chat and pose for a photograph. Except for two-way radios, there normally isn't much chance to talk during the work day.

Yield Map
Computer in combine uses space satellites to calculate field position and yield on the go. Data loaded into a PC is used to print yield maps. (Click to see larger map.) Data can also be used later to precisely spread fertilizer and determine planting density.

Huge Wagon

Brother Paul is mostly hidden by 30 inch tire on this huge auger wagon. This wagon with its big wheels, can haul 800 bushels, 48,000 pounds, over soft ground. It takes a large tractor to pull it safely.

Fast Dump

With roaring tractor engine powering the 12-inch auger, it take only 5 minutes to fill this truck.

Work Goes On

The sun shines through the grain dust as it sets on another day. The harvest will continue a few more hours, however, before the dew begins slowing the machinery.
